Tigger, Eeyore, and Retirement

Do you remember the show Winnie the Pooh? There were two characters that always intrigued me. Eeyore and Tigger. Tigger was a bubbly, excited, and cheerful tiger that loved life and bounced his friends continually. In fact he is quoted as saying “Once in a while someone amazing comes along…and here I am.” Eeyore on the other hand was a gloomy, pessimistic, and depressed donkey. Everything was half empty and there was always something that could be worse. Eeyore is quoted as saying this, “It’s snowing still, and freezing. However,” he said, brightening up a little, “we haven’t had an earthquake lately.”

So you can definitely see the contrasts between the two. Sometimes I feel like the media does a great job of being an Eeyore. They gear their stories to prey on the fears and tragedies so more people will watch which can in turn make people fearful. It’s like the guy who said to his friend, “Cheer up, things could be worse.” And so he did and sure enough things got worse. Not everything is doom and gloom especially when the subject of retirement comes up. I recently read and article that gave good news for and about retirement. I think you’ll enjoy it. One of the points I love the most is that happiness is independent of spending. Don’t rely so much on what you can and can’t spend your money on. Look at what you’re already doing with the money you can spend. It could be investing in grandkids education, giving to your church, or spending more date nights with your spouse. What ever it is let the purpose and impact be the driver and not your happiness.
